The Cinque Terre is in an area of northern Italy where 5 old medieval towns cling to the steep cliffs on the Mediterranean, not far from the French border.
We got there by train from Switzerland and found ourselves fighting off colds. In addition to that, the sea was quite turbulent. As a result, there were no boats operating between the villages. We checked into our room and walked down through the tiny village to the harbor, where people were watching the terrific waves crashing onto the jetty, throwing spray into the sky. It is a fantastic place to watch the sunset, which we did. Once the sun sank below the horizon, someone clapped. Haha I’m sure the sun appreciated it.
Next day we were definitely under the weather with our colds, and it was raining too, making the trails very slippery. So we took a day off and laid low. Fortunately our apartment had a partially covered deck, and a full kitchen. So after a trip to the small grocery, we were in good shape.
